While the Château de Versailles has been the subject of numerous academic studies in history and art history, this research proposes to consider this architectural object from the point of view of its representations in French literature and international cinema. The selected corpus covers works from 1980 to the present day, a period that corresponds both to the boom in tourism at the Château de Versailles and to a significant increase in the number of novels published in the publishing sector. The growing success of the historical novel is also significant for the period. This research will examine modernity's relationship with this object of the past and will ask, in the manner of Philippe Delaveau in his poem "Petite suite pour Versailles" (2013): "What does the residence of kings mean to the forgetful age, enamoured of technology?". While contemporary literature has not abandoned Versailles, its relationship with the château is different from that of previous generations of writers. The textual material selected for this exhibition is approached from a geocritical perspective, an approach developed by Bertrand Westphal in the 2000s. More than just a setting or a simple framework for the narrative, the Château de Versailles has become a veritable symbol, charged with multiple and sometimes contradictory representations. Through stylistic analysis, we will attempt to identify the issues at stake in this contemporary writing about the castle and the scriptural methods used by the authors to exploit this heritage object, which is both individual and collective. The geocritical methodology also makes it possible to take into account the impact of the texts on the real referent and the way in which the castle is promoted to the public. The restoration of the Queen's Hamlet at Versailles, for example, is not unrelated to the renewal of Marie-Antoinette's image.
