L’espace lotharingien et l’armée (XVIe – XVIIIe siècles) : l’empreinte militaire dans les villes de frontières

Du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle, la Lorraine subit les intrusions et ponctions des deux principales puissances européennes qui sont ses voisins directs, le Royaume de France et le Saint-Empire romain germanique. Prise en étau, cette "zone tampon" est un espace de conflit, ce qui se traduit, sur le terrain, par une forte militarisation des frontières. Dans cet espace d’importance stratégique, ces dernières présentent, sur la période, une évolution notable : initialement poreuses, non matérialisées et faiblement inscrites dans la mémoire collective, elles gagnent, au fil du temps, à la fois en matérialité et en réalité sociétale. En parallèle, la mise en place progressive d’une armée permanente influe non seulement sur l’organisation spatiale des territoires, mais également sur le fonctionnement des groupes humains, sur l’économie, sur le progrès technique.

From the 16th to the 18th century, Lorraine suffered the intrusions and punctures of the two main European powers which are its direct neighbors, the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire. Caught in a vice, this “buffer zone” is a space of conflict, which translates, on the ground, into a strong militarization of borders. In this strategically important space, the latter show, over the period, a notable evolution: initially porous, not materialized and weakly inscribed in the collective memory, they gain, over time, both in materiality and in societal reality. At the same time, the gradual establishment of a standing army not only influences the spatial organization of territories, but also the functioning of human groups, the economy, and technical progress.
