Le sujet de cette thèse de doctorat est d’étudier la manière dont la société française s’est appropriée politiquement les médias numériques depuis les années 1980. La France est un espace d’étude particulièrement intéressant : le Minitel, ce terminal vieilli des premiers temps de l’informatisation de la société hexagonale, anticipe à bien des égards l’Internet d’aujourd’hui. Cette thèse devra porter une attention particulière à la transition du Minitel vers l’Internet, afin de comprendre le Web politique français des années 1990. Cette « archéologie du numérique » partant du Minitel permet de lutter également contre un certain réductionnisme qui consiste à penser l’histoire du numérique uniquement au travers d’Internet. Ce discours téléologique qui gomme la contingence historique laisse de côté tous les précédents et les alternatives au Net.

Résumé de la thèse en anglais

The topic of this PhD is to study how French society used the digital media politically in the eighties until the beginning of the new millennium. France is the right place to study the digital media history. The Minitel, this obsolete terminal in the early period of the computerization of France, anticipated the Internet. This thesis will also pay attention to the transition between the Minitel and the Internet, to understand the political French Web in the nineties. This « digital archaeology » allows us to avoid a sort of reductionism that equates digital history only with the Internet. Indeed, this teleological discussion erases the historical connection and forgets all the predecessors and alternatives of the internet.
