Le musée national de Damas, fondé en 1919, a fermé de 2012 à 2018. Un seul département sur les cinq a pu rouvrir ses salles depuis. Parmi ceux toujours fermés à ce jour, le département d’art moderne, créé dans les années 1950 et composé de plus de 1500 œuvres, reste actuellement inaccessible. Par l’investigation de ce corpus d’œuvres, cette recherche vise à analyser les tendances plastiques et les questionnements identitaires. Ce processus d’étude et de valorisation d’un ensemble de productions artistiques syriennes du siècle dernier s’inscrit dans une nécessité de sauvegarde et de réhabilitation d’un héritage aujourd’hui menacé.

The Damascus National Museum, founded in 1919, went through six years of total closure from 2012 due to the war. Only one of the five departments of this Syrian art and antiquities museum was able to reopen its rooms in 2018. Among those still closed to this day, the modern art collection, created in the 1950s and made up of nearly 1500 works, remains currently inaccessible. This collection, the oldest acquisitions of which date from 1908 and which cover until the early 2000s, testifies to a century of modern and contemporary Syrian art and despite everything remains very little documented and studied. By investigating this body of work, this research aims to analyze its plastic trends and identity questions. While questioning its role as a collection of a state ruled by a single party since the 1970s, of which we know the tragic fate. Through the prism of this museum's modern art collection, which is now invisible, this investigation is about taking a contemporary critical vision at recent Syrian heritage. This process of studying and promoting a set of Syrian artistic productions from the last century is part of a need to safeguard and rehabilitate a heritage that is now threatened. A reflection intrinsically linked to the problems of a public cultural institution and its modalities of survival in a context of civil war.
