En cette ère d’urgence écologique, où il en va de notre responsabilité individuelle autant que collective, la question se repose de savoir si l’écriture de romans a un rôle à jouer, lequel, via quels choix stylistiques et narratifs, et quels effets ils suscitent. En dialogue avec, d’une part, la création d’un récit-enquête (Debout sur les falaises), ludique et scientifique, qui met en lumière une pratique polluante quoique répandue en agriculture, et, d’autre part, l’analyse des œuvres de quatre auteures contemporaines, nous questionnons l’émergence d’une nouvelle forme d’engagement dans la fiction qui, si elle prend en charge les réalités sociales, parfois par l’écriture documentaire, privilégie le ton de l’humour (un « engagement dégagé ») pour agir.

At this time of environmental emergency, when we all have to take responsibility, the question arises as to whether literature still has a role to play, what this role might be, and what stylistic and narrative devices might help to fulfil it. “Writing a novel in the face of collapse” combines two complementary facets: on the one hand, an investigation novel, funny and scientifically informed at the same time, about polluting yet very common farming practices and on the other hand, a critical analysis of the use of irony in the work of four contemporary female authors. The aim of our study is to question a new form of political commitment in the 21st-century French novel which engages with social issues but does so on an ironic tone, which we term “engagement dégagé” (a “playful” mode of commitment).
